Do opposites attract?

( The larger version looks better. )

My superficial answer’s inclined toward a ‘yes’.
But what do you think?

(p.s. So I’ve broken my record of one illustration per year! This one took me forever.)

Tell me what you think.

This is wonderful! I love the balance of the two sets. Wonderful contrast of colors and placement and body language and everything. Very nice. :)

And I think attraction can never be distilled to such a simple statement. But then I’m probably just being difficult. :P

Ah, I meant to ask! What program do you use for digital work (especially coloring)?

    •   reply | #

thank you for the compliments :)

and no, i don’t think you’re being difficult – in fact i totally agree! one of my favourite verses is actually “There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden.” (Pr30:18-19)

I use Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos 3 for lineart and coloring. Have you bought a digital tablet yet – i remember you considering buying a little while back?

      •   reply | #

Yes! I did get an intuos. My parents bought it for me for Christmas. :)

        And that verse is fantastic.

I love it! Kind of yin & yang, haha. I do agree that opposites attract, though fundamentally/personality-wise I suppose there has to be more similarities than not.

    •   reply | #

It did remind me of yin and yang too while I was filling in the background, haha. I think it is vital to have similar goals / beliefs / value system too.

Thanks for commenting! It feels different coming from an artist ;p

haha did you have david and i in mind when you drew that? just kidding. i just feel so overdressed all the time and this illustration kinda reflects it. however, i don’t think opposites attract. personally i think i would be more attracted to someone who is similar to me. though it does not appear that way at all on the outside. wouldn’t most people be attracted to someone they can identify with or are similar to them?

what — i most certainly did *not* have you and David in mind; don’t worry! i’ve been toying with this idea for a long time now.

ya, i agree with you, but the “laws of attraction” is a tough one to describe anyway (gosh I sound so dumb saying those words), but i’m the least qualified to speak anyway!

Wow!so nice drawings and interesting topic.i agree it partly.the necessary element of attraction is that they admire and understand each other.by the way, girls in the picture look pretty and boys also look handsome.i think you probably drew someone in your real life such as your girlfriend or someboby else? -Judia

    •   reply | #

hi Judia, thanks for reading and commenting! a few people have thought so, but no, i didn’t have anyone in mind when i drew these characters – i had their clothes style roughly in mind to begin with, then came the postures with much trial and error, but their faces and hairstyle came really in the last minute haha.

i hope everything’s well with you; take care!

      hi grace, thanks for commenting!
i’m still waiting for your critique for this one – i’m sure you’ve got lots to dissect from the errors of this piece and teach me on! don’t worry, i’ve got blood ready so i won’t bleed to death so easily haha

  6.   reply | #

this is fantastic! and yes, i think opposites do attract, because there has to be that initial element of fascination with someone who is different from everyone else you’ve seen previously. but i do also think that the fundamentals have to be complementary, otherwise it would never work. :D

hey, thanks for the comment! its been a while, how have you been? hows college going?

    Stilettos !!!

This is so well drawn. Love the girl’s sky-high stilettos. I am not quite convinced with the theory of opposite attraction. It serves well in physics but less so in human interaction. We are too random for any theory to explain. My thoughts anyway.

hey ke li, thanks for commenting! and yup, im not ashamed to admit that the stilettos were one of the few parts of this picture that I enjoyed drawing the most too! haha yeah human interaction is too complex, thats why its interesting

I think, based on my experience and others’, the opposite usually attracts better than the latter. I guess that’s the beauty of it and God makes these two become one as a beautiful “item”. However, i know everything has its pros and cons. Afterall, i think the only way to go through it is by faith, hope and love. Like what the bible says “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
